Position Overview:
The Advocate Support Specialist mentors people supported by sasi to understand their rights, communicate their preferences while making informed choices that fit their lives. The Advocate Support Specialist promotes advocacy throughout all levels of the agency, including stakeholders and within Western New York communities.
Reporting Relationship/Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Advocate Support Specialist receives direct and ongoing administrative supervision from the Chief Quality Officer. The Advocate Support Specialist works collaboratively with the Chief People Officer and other agency personnel. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Functions:

6. Supports the agency’s self-advocacy group.
7. Provides outreach to people supported, natural supports, employees, stakeholders and the community at-large promoting advocacy, consistent with sasi’s mission, vision and core values.
8. Adheres to quality management standards and maintains confidentiality.
9. Assists people through challenges as they take on new roles and responsibilities.
10. Enlists people supported in advocacy activities according to their individual talents and interests.
11. Assists Employee Resources in the hiring and on-boarding process by participating in interviews and new employee orientation, and/or by facilitating the participation of people supported by sasi.
12. Participates in community-based and sasi-sponsored events.
13. Participates in agency-wide committees and staff meetings as assigned.

Required Qualification:
• Direct personal experience with one or more Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD)
• High School Diploma or GED Preferred
• Working knowledge of email, internet and Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong soft skills (positive communication, encouraging, patient, etc.).
• NYS Driver’s license / Access to reliable transportation

Working conditions:
• Must be able to maintain regular work schedule of at least 20 hours per week as well as perform essential duties as described on attached form.
Travel required:
• Must have the ability to travel to worksites and/or various destinations throughout Western New York. Must be flexible in schedule to accommodate and participate in a variety of work settings. Must have a reliable independent means of transportation to travel to sites as assigned.
Training expectation:
• Able to provide information and communicate to a diversity of people.
• Training sessions may include one on one and large group settings.
