Position: American Sign Language Interpreter

Report To: Special Education Teacher

Job Summary

Facilitate communication between hearing or deaf and hard of hearing students in the classroom; serve as a liaison between deaf or hard of hearing students, hearing students and instructors; and perform related work as required.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide sign language interpreter services
  • Interpret classroom instruction, conversations, events, and other spoken word situations using American Sign Language or other manual sign systems appropriate for the language and cultural background of the deaf or hard-of-hearing student.
  • Work collaboratively with the special education teacher to plan and organize the instruction.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to accurately interpret spoken language to sign language and interpret sign spoken language to spoken language.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language or other sign systems used by students.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills; ability to work independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with students and staff.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Experience working in sign language
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language

Compensation

This will be determined based on experience and salary schedule placement.
