About the Role

The Company is seeking a Chief Education and Interpretation Officer to lead its mission of sharing the culture and lessons of the American Civil Rights Movement. This executive will be responsible for the education, collections, and interpretation strategy, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the civil rights story is maintained. The role involves managing a department staff, overseeing the curation of both permanent and rotating exhibits, and fostering relationships with the scholarly community. The ideal candidate will have a Master’s or doctorate degree in a relevant field, a strong background in curatorial services or museum programming, and a proven track record in budget management. They should be adept at leading diverse teams, be committed to professional development, and have the ability to work with a wide range of populations. The Chief Education and Interpretation Officer will also be expected to spearhead new programs and initiatives that align with the museum's mission and to increase community engagement and partnerships. Professional qualifications for the position include a strong leadership ability, a background in deep collaboration, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of museum practices. The role requires a leader with excellent administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills, who is proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable with data-driven decision-making. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, capable of managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines, and will serve as a spokesperson for the museum on relevant issues. They should also be prepared to convene conversations around civil rights, diversity, and inclusion, and to assist in philanthropic efforts. The Chief Education and Interpretation Officer will play a pivotal role in the reopening of the Legacy Building, a key part of the museum's expansion, and must be dedicated to the museum's vision of inspiring action for positive social change.
