Job Description

FireSeeds is conducting a confidential retained search with a civil construction company in Birmingham, AL.

Position: Director of Human Resources

Location: Birmingham, AL

Compensation: $150,000 – $175,000 (base salary) + performance-based bonus

Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt

About the Opportunity

A growing heavy civil construction company is seeking an experienced Human Resources Director to lead and strengthen all aspects of its people operations. This is a key leadership position responsible for driving HR strategy, managing benefits and compliance, and supporting a workforce that spans both office and field operations.

The ideal candidate combines strategic insight with hands-on capability — comfortable working alongside executives while also managing day-to-day HR functions. This is a unique opportunity to build, refine, and elevate HR systems and culture within a respected, self-performing contractor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement HR policies and programs that align with company goals and support long-term growth.
  • Manage BambooHR (or similar HRIS) for recruiting, onboarding, employee data, and reporting.
  • Oversee 401(k), health, dental, vision, and disability benefits in partnership with external vendors.
  • Advise leadership on workforce planning, employee engagement, and retention strategies.
  • Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Support managers and supervisors with employee relations, performance, and policy training.
  • Direct all recruiting, onboarding, and offboarding processes for both salaried and hourly personnel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; HR certifications (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP) preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive HR leadership experience — construction industry or adjacent field experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with BambooHR or similar HRIS platforms.
  • Strong understanding of benefits and 401(k) plan administration.
  • Proven ability to manage compliance, employee relations, and workforce development across diverse teams.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills with a practical, results-driven mindset.

What’s Offered

  • $150,000 – $175,000 base salary, plus performance-based bonus potential.
  • Comprehensive benefits: health, dental, vision, disability, and 401(k) with company match.
  • Opportunity to shape and modernize HR practices in a respected heavy civil construction company.
  • A collaborative environment with strong leadership support and growth potential.
