Introduction

The Pathways to Public Service Program is an initiative that strengthens the pipeline of diverse talent from local colleges and universities, including Howard University, the University of the District of Columbia, and Bowie State University, into District government roles. The program is designed to provide 12-month public service apprenticeships, professional mentorship, and direct hiring pathways for participants into full-time government employment.

Duties And Responsibilities

Performs call center technical phone support for multiple District agencies and schools. Perform triage and technical assistance in a multi-platform environment. Gathers incident information, troubleshoots, updates, resolves and/or escalates to appropriate groups. Receives telephone calls from customers requesting technical assistance. Triages, troubleshoots, escalates or resolves incidents. Remains abreast of developments in current technologies and related industry best practices and the extent to which these developments may benefit the District government.

Qualifications

To participate in the Pathways to Public Service, you must have the following eligibility requirements:

  • Graduate from an HBCU with a bachelor’s degree in either December 2024 or May 2025.
  • Commit to being a resident of the District of Columbia within 180 days.

Education: All academic degrees and coursework must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions. Degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

Or

Experience: Experience must be IT related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate.

And

Specialized Experience: This position requires one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lowest grade level in the District of Columbia government. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • The candidate will have a minimum of 2 years in providing or working in a customer service background/industry.
  • The candidate will have a minimum of 1 year of experience working with Microsoft Windows OS 10 or 11.
  • The candidate will have an awareness/familiarity of Apple iOS devices.
  • The candidate will have a minimum of 1 year of working knowledge/supporting Microsoft Office 365 suite.
  • The candidate must feel comfortable with public speaking.
  • The candidate will have a focus in the Information Technology (IT) field.
  • The candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication in a professional setting.
  • The candidate will need to be flexible as shifts may vary depending on need.

The work is performed in an office setting.

Other Significant Facts

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, hours may change due to need in the department.

Operating Status: In-person reporting is required, however, flexible and limited telework options may be available upon position eligibility and operational needs.

Duration of Appointment : Career Service - Term (13-month appointment)

Pay Plan, Series, Grade : CS-2210-09

Salary: Apprentices will earn an annual salary of $54,183

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not covered under collective bargaining.

Position Designation: This position has been designated as security sensitive therefore the incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability, and as such, incumbents of this position shall be subject to criminal background checks, background investigations, and mandatory drug and alcohol testing, as applicable.

Essential/Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as an Emergency position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual Chapter 12. As such, individual(s) in this position may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties that are vital to the continuity of medical facilities, public safety, emergency services, and/or other crucial operations. Employees designated as an emergency employee based on the nature and circumstances of a particular declared emergency. An emergency employee who has been designated and activated will be

called in to work, required to stay at work, or required to telework, if approved to do so, during the particular emergency situation.
