Job Description
The Radiology Assistant (RA) enhances patient care by extending the capacity of the Radiologist in the diagnostic imaging environment. The RA can perform a variety of diagnostic exams on both in-patient and out-patients , and other needs as required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
PHYSICIAN SUPERVISION LEVELS
a. General Supervision - the procedure is furnished under the physician’s overall direction and control, but the physician’s presence is not required during the performance of the procedure. Under general supervision, the training of the non-physician personnel who actually perform the diagnostic procedure and the maintenance of the necessary equipment and supplies are the continuing responsibility of the physician.
b. Direct Supervision - the physician (or other supervising practitioner) must be present in the office suite and immediately available to furnish assistance and direction throughout the performance of the procedure. It does not mean that the physician (or other supervising practitioner) must be present in the room when the procedure is performed.
c. Personal Supervision - a physician must be in attendance in the room during the performance of the procedure.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Interviews patients to obtain, verify, or update medical history.
2. Reviews the patient's medical record to verify the appropriateness of a specific exam or procedure.
3. Performs physical examination and analysis of data such as signs and symptoms, laboratory values, and significant abnormalities as required by the imaging procedure to be conducted.
4. Assesses risk factors that may be contraindications to the procedure such as health history, medications, pregnancy, psychological indicators, and alternative medicines.
5. Performs the following examinations and procedures, including contrast media administration, placement of needle or catheter, and operation of imaging equipment, under general supervision of a radiologist:
- Upper GI
- Esophagram
- Small bowel studies
- Contrast enema
- Evaluation of percutaneous gastric and enteric tubes.
6. Performs the following examinations and procedures, including contrast media administration, placement of needle or catheter, and operation of imaging equipment, under direct supervision of a radiologist:
- Nasoenteric and oroenteric feeding tube placement
- Joint injection and aspiration
- Arthrogram, including conventional, CT, and MR
- PICC placement
- Paracentesis with appropriate image guidance
- Thoracentesis with appropriate image guidance
- Lumbar puncture under fluoroscopic guidance
- Fine needle aspiration
7. Performs one or more of the following procedures under the level of supervision by a radiologist as specified in the request letter submitted by the radiologist (see PHYSICIAN SUPERVISON LEVELS):
- Lower extremity venography
- Lumbar, thoracic, or cervical pyelography
- Nontunneled venous central line placement
- Venous catheter placement for dialysis
- Breast needle localization
- Ductogram (galactogram)
- Ttube cholangiogram
- Retrograde urethrogram
- Port injection
- Fistulogram
- Sinogram
- Loopogram
- Swallowing study
- Hysterosalpingogram
- Other specific procedures approved by the Board
8. Monitors patients during procedure.
9. Teaches and collaborates with radiology residents in Fluoroscopy and Ultrasound guided procedures.
Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
